APC In-fighting Spills into the Open as Naira Swap Deadline Elapses

228

Fault lines in the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) have been laid bare as the naira crisis continues to spiral out of control. Protests have rocked the country as frustrations over cash unavailability boils.

Earlier in the month, APC governors led by Kaduna State governor, El-Rufai, went to the Supreme Court and got a suspension of the CBN deadline. El Rufai also claimed that people within the Aso Villa were working to sabotage the APC campaign by enforcing unnecessary hardship on the people to turn them against the APC.

Buhari has been in the center of all this as he has backed the Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele leading to widespread speculations that he doesn’t want the APC presidential candidate to win the elections. However, after a lot of speculation, President Buhari has resumed making rally appearances for the Tinubu campaign, showing up in Sokoto last week.

However, the APC government is still divided on the naira swap deadline, with APC governors pushing for a more extended deadline to remove the sting in what has become one of the government’s most poorly implemented policies.

The Federal government on the other hand is more bullish, and the CBN is insisting that the old naira notes are no longer legal tender. The Supreme Court decision might break the impasse but it showcases the disarray of the APC government, and how that power tussle translates into real life suffering for the people of this country.
