The problem of insecurity in Nigeria has reached a breaking point. The continued kidnapping of school pupils and teachers is a worrisome development. The government lacks the capacity to stop this.
SWL condemns the situation unequivocally and welcomes the upsurge of popular resistance against this problem.
We salutes the initiative that the African Action Congress (AAC) has brought to bear in spurring brother civil society movement into action.
SWL has repeatedly pointed out that insecurity in Nigeria is a structural problem. The predatory nature of the bankrupt political economy run by the ruling elites is at the root of the problem.
The Socialist Workers League will join the African Action Congress and the broader civil society movement in a series of planned demonstrations to protest the worrisome situation.
The importance of demand for immediate freedom for the abducted pupils in Oyo state, in Sokoto State, and across the country cannot be over emphasised.
The protests are also against the indefensible situation where millions of poor working people and their communities are being held to ransom by bandits in different parts of the country.
Only we can liberate ourselves; the government cannot do this. The ruling class is hardly interested in our wellbeing except to the extent that it serves their purpose. We will no longer allow them to use us as cannon fodder.
The violent attack on the peaceful protesters in Ibadan by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), led by its President, stands condemnable. This attack being sponsored by the government to repress the uprising shall be resisted by the people. We demand the prosecution of the perpetrators of this violence as they are known faces to the Oyo State police command.
The people are waking up to say no more. Social justice and resistance are the way forward to bringing perennial insecurity to an end.
Onward forward to the total liberation of the people!
Down with all reactionary forces propagating insecurity!
