SWL Demands the Immediate Release of ‘Yele Sowore

1566

The Socialist Workers League demands the immediate and unconditional release of Omoyele Sowore, the National Chairperson of the African Action Congress (AAC) and publisher of Sahara Reporters. Yesterday, the police arrested and detained Sowore after he honored an invitation from the Inspector General of Police monitoring unit.

Everything about the process was shadowy. The only clear thing is that the IGP, whose tenure elongation contravenes subsisting police service rules, is out on a mission of vendetta to silence Sowore, who has been vocal in calling out the illegality of the elongation.

Closely related to this is the class interest of the oppressors, which the IGP serves. Sowore and the AAC, as a revolutionary party, have been unbowed and unrelenting in fighting exploitation and oppression in the country, to the consternation of the ruling class.

The impunity with which Sowore was arrested is being matched with the violence with which he is being treated already, in detention. There are reports of his being tortured this morning and his hand broken in the cell.

This is unacceptable. We demand the immediate release of Sowore and the sack of Mr Kayode Egbetokun from the office of IGP that he has been illegally occupying. We urge organisations of the working people and civil society movement to stand up against repression and rally around these demands.

#FreeSowore #EgbetokunMustGo #FreeSoworeNow!
