Nigeria Labour Congress organised its 12th National Delegates Conference on 5-6 February. And a few months later, delegates conferences were also held at all the State Councils of the trade union centre.

Comrade Ayuba Wabba, who is also president of the International Trade Union Confederation was re-elected as president to serve a second four-year term.

The beginning of Comrade Ayuba’s first term was marred by factional politics on the part of a splinter group that lost at the elections and staged a walkout. The group has now defined itself as the United Labour Congress. SWL put this development in perspective, noting the distraction that goes with factionalism.

There is now no such distraction. Meanwhile, there is a lot ahead for the renewed NLC leadership to face over the next four years. President Buhari has made it clear that there will be economic attacks on working-class people. This will have to be frontally resisted. And the need to build a mass-based socialist labour party is also a very important issue that now has to be addressed by the NLC.
