Stop Tyranny at UI: Reinstate Ojo Aderemi!

1339

The Socialist Workers and Youth League (SWL) condemns the rustication of Ojo Aderemi, President of the Students Union of the University of Ibadan (UI) over his leading protests against management’s fraudulent refusal to issue Identity Cards that students have paid for.

SWL posits that protests and such other dissenting acts are human rights that a sane university must never tamper with. College students in Britain are striking continually over climate change while Alaa Salah, a university student and Nubian amazon is leading protests against the dictatorship of Omar Al-Bashir.

The management of the University of Ibadan should own up to its own corruption by reinstating Ojo Aderemi immediately, and issue the ID cards that have been paid for already.

SWL believes that education is never real without democracy and genuine dissenting. We call on school managements to stop the attacks on students and staff unions as well as students and staff leaders.

The ruling class is only interested in education for the rich and continue to make public schools home of de-education through underfunding; imposition of managements; and victimizations of dissenting students and staff. Only collective mass actions can stop this!

We admonish UI students to rise and fight for Ojo Aderemi and their students’ Union. We also call on solidarity for Ojo Aderemi from staff unions, organised labour and civil society.

Freedom cometh by struggle and solidarity!

Andrew Emelieze,
National Chairperson
SWL
