ARREST OF 70 WOMEN: ABUJA IS NOT IN BONDAGE!

2253

The Socialist Workers and Youth League (SWL) calls for the immediate release of over 70 women arrested over the weekend in clubs in Abuja over clubbing and “prostitution”.

The women were brutalized and harassed. This is a bad occurrence that has been the norm all over the country. It is especially worse in the cities.

We believe that all humans have a right to their freedom to social relations and work. Clubbing and night social activities are rights that must not be taken away in any sane society. Life is meant to be enjoyed. What sadistic and anti-freedom law stops people from singing and dancing in the nights?! Are people meant to be living like graveyards where everywhere is in curfew?!!

We posit that no one in the guise of any moralism, no matter which model or religion, has any right to take away peoples’ freedom. A freedom to happiness at that!

What a government that knows its onions needs to do is to guard clubs and ensure safety. Clubbing and other social activities can help to build a night economy that will advance societal development.

No one however expects sanity from anti-people governments that breed police brutality and military harassments. We therefore demand that the arrested women should be immediately released with apologies. We call on all lovers of freedom to troop out in solidarity with the victimized. We must ensure justice so that we can start displaying real resistance against all oppressions.

All for one, one for all!
