WRC Stands in Solidarity with Ogun State Workers Strike for Remittances of Their Pension Funds

444

The Workers Rights’ Campaign (WRC) stands in solidarity with the workers in Ogun State as they embark on an indefinite strike action declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ogun State Council. The workers are going on strike to press home their demands over the non-remittance of the contributory pension funds which is a statutory and constitutional matter, by employers and government. The scheme is being reduced to a sham in Ogun state, at the expense of the worker whose contributory pensions are deducted at source, but not remitted by the employer.

Pension helps workers maintain their livelihood after retirement, jeopardising with such scheme is a total and shameful aggrandisement of power by the state government, as such WRC stands in solidarity with the striking workers and salutes their bravery at the barricades. We call upon all workers in the state to stand firm until they win.

In the light of the foregoing, the WRC therefore rejects the position of the Ogun state government to introduce a scheme that is geared towards shortchanging workers in the state which took full effect from 1st July, 2025. Workers are always at the receiving end of employers and state governments’ draconian policies. This is even against the backdrop of the sorry state workers in the civil and public service have been faced with since the Tinubu regime came into office.

Workers welfare must be respected and protected. This outright disregard for workers must stop. The state government must address those concerns of the workers. We urge all working people in the state, including informal economy workers as well as civil society organisation to join the brave and gallant workers who have dared to choose a path for freedom and a society where no worker should be deprived of good health, access to quality education and social services considering the dire economic conditions that workers across the country have been forced into due to the ridiculous minimum wage that can barely take any one home.
