The living conditions in Nigeria have become unbearable for tens of millions of poor working people. To eat has become hard. We are all just getting by, from one day to the other. The prices of food have gone beyond our reach; with food inflation reaching its highest rate in 28 years! Millions of people have become unemployed. Even those who have jobs cannot survive on the slavery wages we earn.
It is the anti-people capitalist policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s APC regime that have brought us to this devastating situation. They keep telling us to bear it as sacrifices for a better tomorrow. But they are not making any sacrifices. They and members of their families are using money from the public purse, which could have been used for our benefits, to live in luxury.
And we have heard the false story of “trickle down” of wealth for decades. But our lives only get worse. So, we will not allow ourselves to be fooled. Indeed, working-class people and youth across the country, including members of the SWL, have fought back several times this year with strikes and protests.
The government’s response has been repression. Security forces killed over forty people during the August #EndBadGovernance protests and arrested almost two thousand more. The government has unjustly put dozens of these protesters on trial, with ten of them being charged with treason for no just cause.
The aim of the regime is to drive fear into our hearts. But we must not allow ourselves to be intimidated. We must fight until we win. We have no choice if we are not to die from hunger and hardship. The struggle ahead of us will not be easy. But we can see from the struggle we have waged that we can win only when we stand united, organise and fight. Mobilise and organise your workplace, community, school, union to resist the government’s policies that are making life hard for us.
