Aso Rock of Corruption

231

The recent corruption scandals in the government show that we cannot expect anything better for the people from any section of the ruling class. The interest of all of them is merely to enrich themselves by looting our wealth.

Betta Edu who has just been sacked as Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Sadiya Umar-Farouq her predecessor in the earlier APC government of Muhammadu Buhari, are not the only ones who are guilty. The problem is systemic.

President Bola Tinubu’s recent actions, such as firing Betta Edu and reducing travel expenses for government officials, are merely attempts to divert attention from himself and the criminality of the APC.

As a former Minister of State for Works rightly noted some time ago, Tinubu himself is “corruption personified”. And he appointed Abdullahi Ganduje, who was caught on camera collecting huge amounts as bribes in dollars when he was Kano state governor in 2018, as the APC Chairman.

We, the poor people have always known that our rulers are corrupt. They stole US$20 trillion from the national treasury between 1960 and 2015. When the APC came to power nine years ago, it promised change. It established several social intervention programmes which it claimed it would use to alleviate poverty. There were even some socialists who lauded the so-called progressive or social-democratic programmes of the APC.

We must not allow ourselves to be deceived. To stop corruption, we must kick out our exploiters from power and bring down their house of corruption.
