Uniben Fees Increments: Why Nigerian Students Need United Solidarity Actions on Education

SWL - Press Release 5 September 2021

493

Students of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) are protesting the increments in school fees, accommodation, and Acceptance. They are rejecting a criminal and wicked rise in fees payable during this period of war and economic hardships.

We commend the students for deeming it fit to take real political actions, and we urge them to nationalize the protests by calling on other schools that are having similar problems to join.

Also, ASUU is preparing to go back to strike as the FG has shown no will to implement all the agreements with the lecturer’s union. The Buhari-led APC government hates public education and has failed to provide real funding through the budgets. No one should expect any improvements from neo-fascists as the mass illiteracy gives the system mass recruits for its pro-war agenda.

The increments will soon cut across all campuses. And the National Association of Nigeria Students ( NANS) is still effectively in the hands of the reactionaries who are only usurpers and jobbers. SWL calls on radical students from various campuses to unite in solidarity with UNIBEN students. We also need a new national Students platform like the Alliance of Nigeria Students Against Neo-liberal Attacks (ANSA) to galvanize the radical momentum and lead concerted efforts at uniting all the barricades across campuses into a gigantic movement that would fall the fees, liberate the unions, and reinstate all victimized activists.

Once again, we commend UNIBEN students and join the call for the immediate reversal to the status quo by the management.

In Solidarity!

Moradeke BADRU

National Chairperson
