According to Nikolai Berdyaev, the meaning of man’s moral experiences throughout his whole life lies in putting him into a position to comprehend death. This came to came to mind as friends and associates of Comrade Chima Ubani came together on Wednesday 16th December 2015 to mark the 10th anniversary of his death. Comrade Chima Ubani who died in a ghastly motor accident on his way from an NLC/TUC/LASCO-organized rally aimed at sensitizing Nigerians for protest against any removal of fuel subsidy by the President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration, on 21st September 2005 at Potiskum, Yobe State.
It is indeed 10 since years the Labour movement and radical civil society organizations were thrown into a mourning mood when the cold hand of death snatched away our dearly beloved activist par excellent, Chima Ubani who at the time was Executive Director of the Civil Liberty Organization(CLO)
The anniversary to mark the life and times of Chima Ubani took place at the Olaitan Oyerinde memorial auditorium, Labour house in the central area Abuja. The programme which was chaired by Comrade Ali Ciroma, a former NLC President had; Comrade Ayuba Wabba, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, the NLC General Secretary Peter Ozo- Eson, former General Secretary of NLC, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN) and host of other leading activists nationwide in attendance.
In his tribute to Chima Ubani, Comrade Ayuba Wabba called on all Nigerians to resist any attempt by President Muhammadu Buhari to remove the fuel subsidy, which invariably would lead to increase in the pump price of fuel, to honor the memory of late Chima Ubani who fought the good fight to the last drop of his blood.
In his contribution Mr. Femi Falana (SAN) appreciated the bold step taken by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to put in place a Foundation in honour of late Chima Ubani which he said is long overdue, however he suggested that a joint Foundation should be put in place for all the fallen Comrades, including Comrades Olaitan Oyerinde and Comrade Emma Ezeazu.
The National Convener of United Action for Democracy (UAD) Comrade Baba Aye also paid glowing tributes to Chima.
